Arrow
Ratings for the superhero show just spiked 30 percent for the show’s fifth episode. Arrow delivered 3.7 million viewers and a 1.3 in the adult demo Wednesday night against a full boat of competition on the other broadcast networks. That ties the show’s premiere in 18-49. The rise is well timed — our recap claims this is creatively the show’s best episode since its premiere. Supernatural (3.7 million, 1.0) was up 20 percent.

The daughter of David Cassidy on teenage girls screaming for her father, driving a batmobile and playing the heroine of EL James’ trilogy
I didn’t think it was strange that teenage girls used to scream for my dad.
I grew up knowing how famous he was, so it’s been the only reality I know. I’m really proud to say that I’m a third-generation actor (Katie’s father is David Cassidy and her paternal grandparents are actor Jack Cassidy and actress Evelyn Ward), but my dad always instilled in me that fame wasn’t the important thing, it was about learning the craft and never being afraid to stop learning.
I was a competitive gymnast for 12 years.
I started when I was three and stopped at 15, basically because I knew I wasn’t ever going to be an Olympian. Also, I just wanted to have free time with my friends – I didn’t have much of a life as I was training for 25 hours a week. I had a Russian coach and as everyone knows, they’re very strict. I used to cry out of frustration at not being able to do the moves sometimes. It was tough.
My father loves to advise, but that’s fine because he’s been through it all.
I remember one time he drew me the triangle of knowledge and pointed to the tip saying that was the beginning of our lives and that by the time we’re 30 we’ve barely moved up the triangle. I was about seven when I started acting and he was a little concerned initially, probably because he’d been in the business from a young age, but I didn’t turn professional till I was 18 because both he and my mum were adamant that I got a normal childhood. They weren’t together while I was growing up, but I grew up around him and learned a lot from him about the business. I recorded his old hit I Think I Love You in my teens and he thought it was cute, but I don’t think we’ll work together – I don’t want to mix business with family.
I’m flattered that people have been talking about me for the role of Ana in Fifty Shades Of Grey.
I’ve read the book, it’s great and it would be unbelievable to play her… even if it is a little risqué. I believe they’re in the process of writing a script for it and I’d love to be given the opportunity to take on a character like that. I don’t think the film would offend as many people as maybe the book has.
I always wanted to play a badass chick and get to beat up boys.
My new series Arrow is based on the comic book hero Green Arrow and tells the story of a billionaire playboy, Oliver Queen, who is shipwrecked and returns home to fight crime as the vigilante Arrow. I play Queen’s ex-girlfriend Laurel, who doubles up as the superhero Black Canary. She’s a great fighter, so I’ve been doing fight training for the role. I’m into action, so this is a dream role for me.
My boyfriend (Jerry Ferrara) jokes that I drive around in the Batmobile.
I’m not much of a car person, but I have the new BMW 525. It’s black with tinted windows and black rims and every time I’m in it he says: ‘I’m always expecting some great big dude to jump out, not you!’
I was a bit of a nerd as a kid, but nerds are cool so I’m OK with that.
I was a real videogame nerd. I was a huge Mortal Kombat fan and my favourite fighter was Sub-Zero. His special power was the ability to freeze people but you had to know the technique, which was called the ‘thumb-blaster’ because you would do it so many times your thumbs would be blistered.
British comedy is so brutal.
Nighty Night and Little Britain are my favourites but the lead characters are just so horrendous and horrific, although I still found them completely hilarious.
I always felt older than my peers.
I started working at 18. I had to learn to be professional quickly and that’s been great for me. Acting was always my dream. I can’t believe I get to do it every day.

Oliver is in troooouble!
Arrow’s titular superhero found himself on the wrong side of the law last week after being arrested by Detective Lance (Paul Blackthorne), who suspects that he is the vigilante who has been plaguing Starling City. Of course, Lance is totally right, but he’ll have to prove it first.
This is where Laurel (Katie Cassidy) will step in to represent Oliver (Stephen Amell) — and she’ll have her work cut out for her in the courtroom, going up against Kate Spencer (Chelah Horsdal). Yes, that Kate Spencer.
How will this case change the dynamic between the duo? TVGuide.com asked Cassidy what’s in store for Laurel and Oliver and when we’ll get to meet her Black Canary.
Oliver keeps pushing Laurel away, only to bring her back in. Do you think she could ever really forgive him?
Katie Cassidy: If anyone could forgive, I feel like Laurel would be the one to be able to do it. It takes an enormously strong person to ever forgive someone for doing to her what has been done to her. She has a lot of love for him and she kind of can’t help herself. You’ll continue to see this dynamic between the two of them and this dance that they’re in. I think that she’s trying to forgive and trying to move forward, but it’s not easy.
Oliver now knows about Tommy (Colin Donnell) and Laurel’s relationship. How will that play out going forward?
Cassidy: Laurel is not apologetic for it. She doesn’t feel bad about the fact that she has been with Tommy because she feels like, “Hey, I was dealt pretty bad cards too!” We all deal with it. She’s sort of like, “Just accept it. This is what happened and these are the repercussions from what you’ve done. I’m not going to feel bad about it. You did some bad stuff to me.” Had he not done the stuff that he had done, I don’t think that she would even be put in the position to maybe accept Tommy as a love interest.
And now Laurel will be forced to help Oliver after he’s arrested.
Cassidy: These few episodes, in my opinion, they’re my favorite because you get to see a fun dynamic between Laurel and Oliver, and then you got to see a fun dynamic between Laurel and the Arrow and those parallels. You get to definitely see a bit more understanding of their history. You also get to see Laurel when she’s in court and that day was crazy! All the legal jargon and being in court and fighting for her case, it was a huge scene and it was monstrous for me. It was so fun. I love scenes like that and I love a challenge.
What can you tell us about Laurel helping Oliver in court?
Cassidy: Laurel is very passionate about what she does and she knows she’s good at it. She’s willing to do whatever it takes to prove that. She wants to prove what’s right. I don’t think that she feels that Oliver is capable of being this vigilante. She just doesn’t believe it, so she just knows in her heart that if she doesn’t believe it, she can prove to everybody else why they shouldn’t believe it either. And she’s good.
These episodes seem to indicate there will be an increasing divide between Laurel and her father, Detective Lance.
Cassidy: You definitely get to see some family drama and their relationship being tested at times, but Laurel and her father are extremely close. As Paul [Blackthorne] and I discussed, the family lives and dies between the two of them. It’s been just the two of them since Sarah left because her mother left after, so they’ve had a close relationship. You’ll definitely see that relationship get challenged.
Will Oliver and Laurel ever find some common ground since they’re both trying to clean up Starling City?
Cassidy: That’s just it, with the parallel between the two of them, but she doesn’t necessarily know that’s Oliver. I think there’s enough weight there, almost like a respect, because they both have gone through so much. I think Laurel starts to understand that he’s actually been through a lot and she maybe shouldn’t be so hard on him.
How sick are you of the Black Canary questions?
Cassidy: [Laughs] I actually don’t mind the Black Canary questions because maybe it will encourage the writers to head in that direction. I think it’s something that certainly drew me to this project. I think it would be really fun. Being in a show that’s so action-packed is certainly something that I wanted to do. Being a superhero? Or hero? It would be pretty cool.
Are we going to see more of Laurel kicking ass?
Cassidy: We got a little taste of it, but certainly throughout there have been times where maybe she’s in there somewhere.
What do you hope Laurel stands for between now and her turning into the Black Canary?
Cassidy: It’s not necessarily that she’s going to stand for anything. In the pilot, she says, “If I don’t save the world, who will?” Her intentions are always very good, she likes helping people and likes saving people. She’s a very strong character, and if anything, you’re going to be able to see, on her journey, that maybe going through the law isn’t always what’s morally where her integrity is. She’s been raised that way that everything is by the book because her father is a cop, but I think you’ll get to see her flirt with the idea of, “I’m still doing right, even though it’s breaking the law.” She’ll have to go on this journey to experience that and open her eyes a little bit more. I think she’ll be pretty badass.
Are there any DC Comics characters you’re hoping to see on the series?
Cassidy: Specifically, I’m excited about everyone. Selfishly, Black Canary. [Laughs]

THANK you for the Huntress pic. It made me all the more eager to see Laurel turn into the Black Canary. Any update on that? — Patrick
For the time being, we’ll continue seeing “glimpses” of Laurel’s badass side, according to EP Andrew Kreisberg. Those teases, he says, are the fun of the audience knowing her ultimate destiny. “There will be more stuff coming up where you see glimpses of her as the hero and — especially as her relationship with the arrow deepens — her seeing the benefits of working outside the law,” he says. More immediately, look for Laurel to have a night out on the town — and she’s not exactly happy about it! “There is a fun double-date with Oliver, the Huntress, Laurel and Tommy,” says Kreisberg. “For the Birds of Prey fans out there — you do get to see a Laurel and Helena not entirely enjoy having dinner with each other.”

Arrow
To put it delicately, the CW network has struggled in the ratings in recent years. “Gossip Girl,” formerly its flagship series, has lost most of its audience, unable to average even a million viewers an episode during this, its final season, and the network has not introduced a successful new program since “The Vampire Diaries” in 2009.
There is some hope this year, however, in the form of the new superhero drama “Arrow.” The series premiere on Oct. 10 drew 4.1 million total viewers, which was the largest audience for any show on any night for the network in three years. It was also the most watched CW premiere since “The Vampire Diaries.”
Based on the adventures of the Green Arrow, the DC Comics character introduced in 1941, “Arrow” follows Oliver Queen, a billionaire playboy who also happens to fight crime with his archery skills while favoring emerald-colored attire.
On Oct. 22, CW gave “Arrow” a full-season order, noting that the show had retained 100 percent of viewers 18 to 49 for its second episode. Since that announcement, the show has held onto 85 percent of that audience while hitting the 3.5 million mark in total viewers. The most recent episode, on Oct. 31, recorded a slight drop, but television ratings have been down across the board this week because of Hurricane Sandy; the broadcast also fell on Halloween, a night when fans were just as likely to dress up like Green Arrow as watch a show starring him.
