How would you define tomboy ?
“The word ‘tomboy’ has always encapsulated women whose interests were more aligned with those of men. And to a lot of people that’s still what it means. But as times have changed, I think the definition of a tomboy has changed. To me, a tomboy is a woman who believes in self-confidence and can’t be bothered with acceptance. A woman who doesn’t succumb to traditional gender roles. The kind of woman who will spend her last pennies on a beautiful pair of pumps but runs straight for her sneakers when she has a chance.”

What are the biggest perks of being a tomboy?
“Sneakers, messy hair and little to no make-up.”
How does being a tomboy make its way into your daily life?
“I think being a tomboy is a way of life. It’s not just a pair of pants I put on in the morning. It’s an IDGAF attitude and a willingness to take risks. I carry a pair of Birkenstocks around in my purse in case of emergency, am not afraid to get my hands dirty and would rather get outside than spend all day indoors. So any chance I have to do something active I’m taking it. Even if that just means playing around in the rain on set!”

Why did you want to name the site TomboyKC?
“Honestly, we would have gone with just Tomboy, but godaddy.com made it clear that domain wasn’t an option. Ha! Seriously though, when we started talking about what we wanted the site to stand for, we kept coming back to this irreverent attitude and the idea of a woman who loved fashion but also prioritized comfort and individuality. ‘Tomboy’ seemed to wrap all of that up into one word. It also helps that I have an affinity for menswear and sweatpants.”

What are the must-haves for any true tomboy?
“The only must-have for a true tomboy is a care free attitude. But if you want to fill out your closet, I couldn’t go a day without my sneakers (Chuck Taylors are my go-to), a collection of blazers, a pair of coveralls and a backpack to throw it all in—and I’m not talking about one of those cutesy handbags you wear on your back.”
