What Katie Wore: Prepping For Fall

Written by owner on August 21 2016

Hey first I just want to say sorry about the down time on the site over the last days, It was on are host’s end and nothing I could do about it but all now is back up and working again.

It’s mid to late August (hell, let’s just go with late) and as far as we are concerned we are officially allowed to start shopping for Fall. Which is basically what we have done. While considering everything from footwear to handbags, we’ve committed to just a few must-haves.

Boots – Check. Sure, you’re black ankle boots are still a must, but we also have our sights set on something a little more mod. Like these guys.
Dresses – While we will always be women who live in denim, we’ve kind of been having a moment with the dress. Like a big one. We expect this relationship to reach new heights this Fall, especially if we can manage to move this guy into our closet.
Sunglasses – Statement frames are still our biggest accessory statement and we don’t see that changing anytime soon.
Bags – Sure, pom-poms were all the rage this summer and we are still kind of loving that whole straw moment, but if we have anything to say about it, the little black crossbody is going to be the handbag hero of the season. Particularly because we just added this number to the collection.
What are you shopping for this Fall?

What Katie Wore: Surviving Summer

Written by owner on July 02 2016

Here’s a not-so-secret secret: Katie hates summer clothes. While all the rest of us are wafting around in caftans and breezy dresses, she’s buying blazers andsweatshirts like it’s the fourth of January, not July.

Every summer, without fail, we’ll do a little shopping and you’ll hear over the racks “Why is everything so frilly and bright?” At which point I am prompted to remind her that, “Katie, it’s summer. You hate summer fashion. That’s why.” “Oh. Right.”

Now don’t get me wrong, we both love summer – bring on the popsicles and the pool parties – and don’t want the good weather and good times to end. But let’s just say we aren’t the least bit disappointed that Pre-Fall collections have started to pop up here and there. We’ll be counting down the days until sweaters reign supreme, plaid is the print of choice and layering is our second language, all with mai tais in hand. (Cheers!)

And until then, if you see a girl running around town in a parka in the blistering heat, you know who it is.

What Katie Wore: A New Kind Of Cover-Up

Written by owner on May 28 2016

Each season, a singular style emerges from collections and tickles our fancy until it wants to cry “Uncle.” Despite the fact that it is the red-headed stepchild of our sartorial year, summer is no exception. (Seriously, find us someone who actually likes summer fashion.)

Enter the jumpsuit…again.

The reality is, we’ve always been fans of a good jumpsuit number – remember Spring ’15? But usually the onset of our adult onesie obsession coincides with a season known for wanting to maximize coverage, not avoid it. So we must admit that we originally found it a tid bit shocking how our summer sights set firmly on a garment so sophisticated and, well, full of fabric.

But ultimately, it was the practicality of wearing said suit over swimwear in order to transition effortlessly from the pool to dinner that won us over. When you think about it that way, it’s not so shocking after all. We are nothing if not efficient.

The rest is history.

What Katie Wore: Maui Meetup

Written by owner on May 10 2016

Katie happened to be in Maui for her sister’s wedding last week and, as luck would have it, our friend first and photographer second Steve also happened to be on the island for a friend’s nuptials.

Needless to say, the two met up and had a little Hawaiian hang.

Some things were just meant to be.

What Katie Wore: You Can Call Me Maverick

Written by owner on April 24 2016

Satin bomber jackets are everywhere this Spring. Thanks to the proliferation of thinly padded MA1 bomber-style jackets on the runways, the Spring perfect jacket is all of the things this season. And if you really want to do the trend right, make yours embroidered or patched.

While there are a multitude of colorways available (this burgundy one has our number), our ultimate favorite is the army green interpretation. Call it the Top Gun effect, but something about the whole fighter pilot look has us feeling the need for speed. The more badges the better.

Katie recently nabbed this number on a Barneys shopping trip while in New York City. We like to call this look ‘Maverick.’

What Katie Wore: When Camo Met Spencer

Written by owner on March 28 2016

I’m all about a good sturdy backpack, but a good sturdy camo backpack? My heart just skipped a beat.

We all know that camo has been making a serious comeback for awhile now, and for damn good reason. We’ve been seeing elements of the old-school uniform popping up everywhere.

The army inspired print is familiar yet fashion-forward with undeniable appeal. Mix that with a solid backpack and you’ve just become cutting edge.

Leave it to Spencer Nikosey, the young urban stylish designer of KILLSPENCER, to create such a masterpiece. Not only does this backpack have serious street style written all over it, but it’s also practical – perfect for carrying daily essentials. Oh! Not to mention, it comes with its very own wall mount. BOOM!

That deserves a mic drop.

You’re killin’ it Spencer!

What Katie Wore – “Winter Finally Showed Up”

Written by owner on January 21 2016

Finally. Winter.

It’s like we’ve been waiting patiently for the arrival of a friend we haven’t seen in a long time. The kind of friend you can’t wait to see because it has been so long (like way too long) but who, without fail, manages to overstay her welcome after about a week of overbearing conversations and demanding plans.

True to form, we were collecting sweaters, coats, beanies and other warm weather gear in preparation for the arrival of our long lost frigid friend. We were begging her to hurry up and give us an excuse to break out the parkas. Yet, now that we’ve been hanging out with our cold weather friend for about a week or two and have managed to exhaust the full repertoire of our winter collection, the novelty has worn off and we’ve begun to remember why we wanted good ‘ol winter to hit the road last year…

Right. Because she’s frigid.

What Katie Wore – “Cue The Coats”

Written by owner on November 18 2015

What do you ask yourself when you pick a coat in the morning? Is it just the weather that clouds your judgment, or is there some other statement-making factor that you consider when pulling that pea coat off of the hanger as you bypass your parka?

Having spent more than our fair share of afternoons standing shivering in the wind in a less than substantial outer garment, we’d argue that, whether you’ll admit it or not, the weather is only a factor (albeit substantial, at times) in your outerwear decision matrix. More likely than not, you consider color, coordination and that “me” component as you waltz through your closet playing both judge and jury amongst your coat collection.

So here’s the problem we run into: Who knows what coat you are going to want to wear at any given time, so how does one prepare for the biting cold most definitely ahead?

Given our mercurial taste, over the years we started in the outerwear arena by playing it safe and investing in three classic options with the intent to move on from there. We started with a classic pea coat in a neutral camel – when all else fails there is no better fallback plan. We moved on to a long pinstripe number (another easily incorporated style), and rounded our collection out with a parka with some pizazz (aka, fur), because sometimes the weather really is the most important consideration.

And that held us over for awhile. Until one day, out of the frost-bitten blue, we started feeling a little more in need of a statement and we branched out to houndstooth, which was just a slippery slope away from leather accents and color (oh my!). And once you start playing with color, well….

Tell us our picker isn’t going to point at this oversized amazingness everyday this winter. Just try.

What Katie Wore – “Something About A Leopard And It’s Spots”

Written by owner on November 11 2015

They say that a leopard can’t change its spots and you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Or in not so allegorical language, some people never change.

But around here, we kind of live by the maxim that we are ever-changing, never fixed. Otherwise, what’s the point? And particularly in the fashion sense, our tastes are constantly evolving based on the introduction of new ideas or, in some cases, desensitization – you show an old dog a new trick enough times, he just might pick it up, no matter how unwilling he was to participate at the beginning. (Hello! Did you already forget the phenomenon that was wedge sneakers?)

This is our thesis. Our proof?

You see, collectively there was a time when we were pretty print averse. Texture was fine. Color-blocking? Cool. But that whole prints and the mixing of the prints thing? Pass. It felt messy and complicated. Something women like Leandra Medine could pull off, less because it worked and more because they are who they are on the inside. Not something mere mortals like us were ever meant to attempt.

So we unilaterally avoided them and clung steadily to our monochrome menswear.

But as time passed and prints remained in vogue, we found ourselves congregating around what we like to call the “loud” section of Zara, not buying but “shopping” nonetheless. While perusing glossy pages we lingered on spreads abuzz with design, contemplating what our lives might be like if they had a little more pattern (and less routine) to them. And then, one day out of the blue, without thinking much of it (as it is with most change), a printed purchase was made and an Equipment blouse covered in florals made it into constant rotation. And that was all it took.

Now don’t misunderstand, this leopard’s spots didn’t magically morph into purple hearts – we didn’t go to bed Emmanuelle Alt and wake up Iris Apfel. But we did decide to put our leopard pants on every once in awhile and that should stand for something.

What Katie Wore – “The Moto Effect”

Written by owner on October 21 2015

It’s hard to describe the feeling you get when you put on a leather motorcycle jacket. It’s something akin to putting on a costume while simultaneously feeling the coolest and best version of yourself. Around here, we like to call it the “Moto Effect.” In layman’s terms, this is the effect the motorcycle jacket has of instantly making any outfit – be it the most feminine of maxi dresses or the grungiest of boyfriend jeans – instantly more put together and, for lack of a better word, cooler.

For us, there aren’t really seasons, just warmer months caught between those temperate enough to wear leather fit for a girl gang.

You know what we are talking about. Tell us there hasn’t been a moment when, dressed in your most put-together of ensembles, you happened across a friend in her black and white graphic tee, crisp dark jeans, and casual yet polished leather moto jacket and thought to yourself, “I want to be wearing what she’s wearing.” We know it has happened to you because it happens to us weekly once the temps start to drop.

Finding the perfect moto jacket, however, is another mission altogether – the right crop, the perfect stiffness (not too weathered but not so stiff your movements are those of R2-D2) and the requisite amount of metal (do you want a belt, what are your thoughts on lapel buttons, how many zippers are too many). It’s a tiring process that can take months if not years. We’ve bought real estate faster.

But once you’ve found it? Well, it’s the ultimate in investment staples, as we would beg to venture there is no sartorial sin that a motorcycle jacket can’t fix. Not a one.

You see, if you select the right one (i.e., bypass the one covered in an American flag, it is 70% off for a reason), it will be both timeless and seasonless, turning you into Superwoman one outfit at a time. And while you may not be able to wear it every day (even superheroes need their rest), we have a feeling you could come pretty close.

What Katie Wore: Making It Work

Written by owner on April 16 2015

A few weeks ago, Harpers Bazaar tapped us to put together three looks for a small feature on their website. As luck would have it, Katie was in Los Angeles with an overnight suitcase containing more toiletries than apparel and they needed the images post haste. Not one to turn down an opportunity, we gave the thumbs up and started trying to figure out a way to, in the words of Tim Gunn, “make it work.”

So we booked our fav LA photographer and sent Katie to a vintage store on a mission straight out of Project Runway – one store, three looks, three hours. Dying laughing the entire time, she left with a skirt, a blazer (when all else fails, right?) and a few vintage t-shirts (because obviously). We jumped into this mission headfirst in somewhat of a panic and left with just about everything we already owned only cooler.

We’d like to think that, under pressure, it all came together quite nicely.
