Katie Cassidy Teases Laurel And Oliver’s ‘Interesting’ Relationship, A ‘Less Whiny’ Black Canary

Written by owner on April 16 2015

Recently, we did some catching up with “Arrow” star Katie Cassidy. On the show, Cassidy plays the role of Laurel Lance — assistant district attorney by day, vigilante Black Canary by night.

During the interview, Cassidy spoke on the development of her character and in doing so, gave us a few spoilers about what’s to come for the next few episodes of season 3.

1. From Oliver cheating on Laurel with her sister, to joining him in Team Arrow, the two of them have gone through a lot. How would you describe their current relationship? Is there a chance they can rekindle their past romance?

Their current relationship is interesting. Oliver sees Laurel in an entirely different light. He sees that she has what it takes to be a “fighter” or “hero,” but she hasn’t been properly trained. Laurel is also not afraid to stand up to Oliver and stand up for what she believes in. I don’t think that Laurels current mental state is anywhere near a place of romance. That’s the last thing on her mind.

Katie Cassidy Exclusive: ‘Arrow’ Star Talks Acting Roots, Laurel’s Strong Will, ‘Wonderful’ Costar Relationships

Written by Neide on April 10 2015

Recently, we had the privilege of catching up with Katie Cassidy, who plays Laurel Lance — aka the Black Canary — in The CW’s popular TV Series “Arrow.” In our exclusive interview, Cassidy discusses her acting roots, past roles and her plans for the future.

1. When did you start acting?

When I was in my mother’s womb. Ha! Seriously though, I’ve always had a passion for the art. I began studying acting at the age of 8. I was in theater all through grade school and finally started working as a professional at the age of 18.

2. You come from a family of actors. How much did that influence your decision to become one?

My grandfather, Jack Cassidy, was a phenomenal actor. Followed by my uncles Shaun, Patrick & Ryan, as well as my biological father, David. I’m a third generation actor, so I suppose having a family of actors was destined to influence me in some way. I don’t feel like I consciously made the choice. I guess you can say it’s in the gene pool.

3. How did previous roles on The CW prepare you to play a character like Laurel?

I think the diversity of all characters I’ve portrayed served as ample preparation for such an emotionally complex character. That, and studying acting for almost my entire life has been extremely beneficial. It’s something that I will never stop. I believe that you can never learn too much.

Katie Cassidy’s Style Tips For Festival Season & Beyond

Written by Neide on April 08 2015

Katie Cassidy’s style can be summed up in one word: tomboy.

While the word tomboy and style are seldom used in the same sentence, Cassidy is putting a fresh spin on the term. She launched a style blog called Tomboy KC with her best friend Lynsey Eaton, and together they are proving sneakers can just as fashion-forward as stilletos, and to never underestimate the power of a blazer.

“Today’s modern woman can get away with wearing a lot more,” Cassidy said. “Being sexy doesn’t necessarily mean wearing less clothing. I think it comes from a confidence you have within.”

So when it comes to the “Arrow” star’s personal style, don’t expect her to be following trends.

“I’m not necessarily following what’s trending or what’s not. I think personal style is what is important to me,” Cassidy said. “I love blazers, I love sneakers. I love looking like it was effortless.”

We spoke with Cassidy about her effortless style, her fashion tips for festival season, and what it is like to play a superhero. Keep reading for our latest exclusive:

Katie Cassidy on The Perks of Being a Tomboy

Written by Neide on March 29 2015

How would you define tomboy ?
“The word ‘tomboy’ has always encapsulated women whose interests were more aligned with those of men. And to a lot of people that’s still what it means. But as times have changed, I think the definition of a tomboy has changed. To me, a tomboy is a woman who believes in self-confidence and can’t be bothered with acceptance. A woman who doesn’t succumb to traditional gender roles. The kind of woman who will spend her last pennies on a beautiful pair of pumps but runs straight for her sneakers when she has a chance.”

What are the biggest perks of being a tomboy?
“Sneakers, messy hair and little to no make-up.”
How does being a tomboy make its way into your daily life?
“I think being a tomboy is a way of life. It’s not just a pair of pants I put on in the morning. It’s an IDGAF attitude and a willingness to take risks. I carry a pair of Birkenstocks around in my purse in case of emergency, am not afraid to get my hands dirty and would rather get outside than spend all day indoors. So any chance I have to do something active I’m taking it. Even if that just means playing around in the rain on set!”

Why did you want to name the site TomboyKC?
“Honestly, we would have gone with just Tomboy, but godaddy.com made it clear that domain wasn’t an option. Ha! Seriously though, when we started talking about what we wanted the site to stand for, we kept coming back to this irreverent attitude and the idea of a woman who loved fashion but also prioritized comfort and individuality. ‘Tomboy’ seemed to wrap all of that up into one word. It also helps that I have an affinity for menswear and sweatpants.”

What are the must-haves for any true tomboy?
“The only must-have for a true tomboy is a care free attitude. But if you want to fill out your closet, I couldn’t go a day without my sneakers (Chuck Taylors are my go-to), a collection of blazers, a pair of coveralls and a backpack to throw it all in—and I’m not talking about one of those cutesy handbags you wear on your back.”

Katie Cassidy ‘thrilled’ to portray Black Canary on ‘Arrow’

Written by owner on January 28 2015

The 28-year-old actress shared her excitement for the DC Comics superhero in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. Cassidy has portrayed Laurel Lance on The CW series since its premiere in 2012, and assumed Black Canary after Sara Lance’s (Caity Lotz) death.

“I can’t tell you how happy it made me,” she said of the transition. “Honestly, there’s no words that can even explain how lucky, excited, grateful, thrilled I am. For the Black Canary fans, I hope they’re happy with my performance and my take on the character.”

Sara Lance was killed by Thea Queen (Willa Holland) in the season three premiere, and Laurel Lance took up her sister’s mantle in episode 10. The character will continue her transformation on Wednesday’s episode, as previewed by executive producer Marc Guggenheim.

“If you’re a Laurel Lance Black Canary fan, this episode is going to make you insanely happy,” he teased in a promo. “This is our first episode with Black Canary in full view, total action. It’s a pretty significant step in the life of the series.”

‘Arrow’ star Katie Cassidy on suiting up as Black Canary: ‘It’s messy’

Written by owner on January 28 2015

The moment Arrow fans have been waiting for finally came to fruition during last week’s episode as Katie Cassidy suited up as the Black Canary.

“I can’t tell you how happy it made me,” Cassidy gushes to EW. “I remember at the end of season 2, they needed to fit Sara’s [Caity Lotz] jacket on me and I started to cry when I put it on. I’ve been waiting for this for so long. I’m so happy and honored. From Day 1, I knew that eventually that’s where they were planning to go with the character, but I didn’t know when and it’s television, anything can happen. Honestly, there’s no words that can even explain how lucky, excited, grateful, thrilled I am. For the Black Canary fans, I hope they’re happy with my performance and my take on the character. I hope people are happy.”

But Laurel is far from the fishnet-sporting hero fans know from the comics. In Oliver’s (Stephen Amell) absence, Laurel decidedly stepped up after new baddie Brick (Vinnie Jones) freed a slew of thugs Team Arrow worked so hard to put away. However, she doesn’t quite have the skills the Arrow does. “Even though it’s messy, you can tell there’s fire,” Cassidy says. “She has some skill, but she’s not trained.” That’s exactly why not everyone will be on board with Laurel suiting up. “But then she proves herself because she has so much heart and drive. Arsenal [Colton Haynes] is the first person to come around to it.”

Laurel’s transformation into the Black Canary will really culminate after the trilogy, in an episode aptly titled “Canaries.” “There’s going to be some really crazy, badass scenes of the Canaries fighting,” Cassidy cryptically teases. Let’s not forget, the other Canary—her sister Sara—is dead!

“You’ll be surprised how much Sara is a part of Laurel in season 3 in her going from avenging her sister’s death to honoring her sister’s death to becoming her sister,” Cassidy continues. “Sara is so much apart of season 3 as a character even though she’s physically not there. It stays with her and the show. It’s what gets Laurel out on the streets. It’s what she wants to do. She has a choice. The difference between Sara and Laurel is that Sara didn’t have a choice. When her and Oliver were on the island, she had to go through that with him. Laurel has a choice. She takes her sister’s position, but it comes from her heart and again avenging her sister’s death and honoring her sister.”

As for the one who killed her sister, the cast has already revealed that Laurel will soon find out the truth that Thea (Willa Holland) did the deed, but we’ll be “surprised by her reaction,” Cassidy says. However, Sara isn’t the only one Laurel needs to avenge—after all, those left behind in Starling City believe Ra’s al Ghul (Matt Nable) killed Oliver. “She will seek vengeance on those who she feels deserves it,” Cassidy concludes.

Arrow’s Katie Cassidy On Legacy Heroes, Training at 5 a.m. and Olicity Shippers

Written by owner on January 28 2015

Fresh off a small role in Taken, Katie Cassidy was one of the most recognizable faces in the cast of Arrow when the show launched just over two years ago. Playing Dinah Laurel Lance, she was immediately assumed to be a Black Canary-in-waiting…and then the waiting just kept going.

Eventually, Laurel’s sister Sara — not a character from the comic book source material — was brought in to play the role of Canary and with Oliver’s romantic interests directed primarily at Felicity Smoak, some fans wondered just what role Cassidy was set to play on the hit series.

The same as ever, it turns out. This season has revolved largely around the death of Sara and Laurel’s subsequent transformation into a new, less well-trained and more tech-savvy Black Canary. We got to see her in action and in costume for the first time last week, in the first of what showrunners have described as a “Canary Trilogy,” the second installment of which airs tonight.

Cassidy joined us to discuss the series, her years of waiting for a chance in the mask and just how she handles online fans and critics in a show that’s got such a passionate base.

You’ve seemed really excited about your character and your story in recent interviews. Do you feel like you’re about to enter a really good status quo for Laurel?
Yeah! I mean, look: As an actor, I remember when I met with Greg and Marc and Andrew about this show before we shot the pilot that this is where this character was going to go. That was definitely a huge thing for me. I wanted to do action, I wanted to stay with Warner Bros. and CW and I loved the fact that this character had this journey that she would go on but I didn’t necessarily know how long it would take or what the journey would look like.

I don’t think they did, either; they just knew eventually at some point that Laurel would turn into the Black Canary. When that would be…who knows? They assumed Season One or Two, but you’re shooting a show and things change and you’re trying to find your footing and what’s working and what’s not. I think it’s smart that every character has to earn their suit or their costume. You can’t just overnight all of a sudden be a superhero. You have to go through things and hit your rock bottom and then be able to come out on top and build character and be strong.

‘Arrow’: Is Laurel in Over Her Head? Katie Cassidy on ‘Jaw-Dropping’ Canary Twists!

Written by owner on January 28 2015

Black Canary is here and she’s taking names!

Katie Cassidy swings into action in tonight’s all-new Arrow as Starling City’s latest crime-fighting crusader – but be warned, her debut isn’t exactly the stuff of lore. Driven by her quest to seek revenge for her sister’s death, Laurel’s sloppy rookie mistakes create more problems than solutions, and it’s an unlikely friend who may be her sole savior.

Without Oliver Queen in the mix, is Laurel in over her head as Black Canary? Cassidy caught up with ETonline to dish on what’s to come – plus, scoop on the upcoming “Canaries” reunion!

ETonline: You had such a dramatic entrance at the end of last week’s episode! Is that a preview of what’s to come for Black Canary?
Katie Cassidy: Yeah absolutely! We saw Black Canary at the end of the last episode and I definitely think that’s an introduction to her three-part arc in the next coming weeks – [from] avenging her sister’s death to honoring her sister and becoming her sister, but with her own take on it. She has a ton of drive and heart and she’s a fighter, a go-getter.

ETonline: How do the team – Felicity, Roy and Diggle – first react to Black Canary?
Cassidy: At first, “Team Arrow” doesn’t necessarily respond to it very well but eventually, Roy will start to see that Laurel actually has it in her to go out on the streets and to fight, and that she’s choosing to do this for her sister and for the city and that she means well. He begins to support her.

ETonline: Colton Haynes told us that Roy is the first one to be on Laurel’s side as she transitions to her Canary role. Sounds like their partnership progresses on a more serious level?
Cassidy: Yeah, it absolutely will – just with Laurel being involved in Team Arrow. It’s been a blast and I’m having the best time.

Katie Cassidy on Her New Line of Glasses: I Used to Wear Just Frames with No Lenses – People Thought I Was Nuts!

Written by owner on October 23 2014

Katie Cassidy didn’t always need glasses, but that didn’t stop her from wearing them. “I love them so much that before I needed [reading glasses] I literally would pop out the lenses,” she tells PEOPLE. “I put them on and just felt like a whole new person, almost like a disguise. People probably thought I was nuts, but I didn’t care — they made me feel good and were fun to wear around.”

The Arrow actress is now sharing that passion for glasses with fans, creating a collection for Glasses.com with her best friend and fellow lifestyle blogger Lynsey Eaton (with whom she writes Tomboy KC). The pals took us behind the scenes of their Vancouver shoot, where they styled looks and got silly backstage

The collection, Sorella + TOMBOY KC, is “a celebration of all of the women [who] have inspired and influenced us in our lives,” Cassidy tells PEOPLE. “The frames are as varied in color and style as the women we call friends and family, but they all share this sort of confidence and really cool aesthetic. I’m honestly impressed with every single pair.” Their designs comprise 14 frame styles varying in shape (from rectangular to soft squares to cat eye to rounded) and an assortment of colors including blue, green and tortoise.

The Scribbler: Katie Cassidy on Fighting for the Role

Written by owner on September 17 2014

Katie Cassidy talks about playing a woman with Dissociative Personality Disorder and the trouble with lip piercings.

It was nearly two years ago that I visited the set of The Scribbler at Linda Vista Hospital in Los Angeles. Katie Cassidy was just about to begin filming “Arrow” after shooting the pilot. That’s how long it takes with indie films, and XLrator Media is releasing The Scribbler in theaters, VOD and iTunes on September 19. Based on the Dan Schaffer graphic novel, The Scribbler stars Cassidy as Suki, a woman with multiple personalities being interrogated about deaths at the halfway house in which she now lives. Suki’s story reveals a process known as the Siamese Burn which attempts to remove her alters, and one alter who uses Suki’s body to scribble messages backwards all over the wall. On the set, Cassidy was dressed in a skeleton costume which she wears for the second half of the movie, and took her lip ring out in between takes.

CraveOnline: I was wondering if you would have the lip piercing from the comic book, and you do. So you take it in and out in between takes?
Katie Cassidy: I do, because if you’ll notice, I started to get a little scab.

Are you tempted to fiddle with it?
Yeah, it’s actually become a habit, I think as a character and then me also in general. Off set, I’ll look for it and it’s not there.

Did you go after this film?
I did.

How did you hear about The Scribbler and how did you fight for it?
I read the script and fell in love with it, the character. I’d been looking to play a character like this for a while, so I called my agents, had a meeting with the director and producers. Prior to going to the meeting, prepping for it I obviously read up about Dissociative Identity Disorder and came in with my ideas and thoughts specifically on different scenes, on this character, on what I thought the character should look like, what I would do, actually sat down with somebody who had a multiple personality and just observe and learn as much as I possibly can. They were obviously impressed with my presentation on it and I got the offer.
