Betting on Katie Cassidy

Although Katie Cassidy may be the offspring of a Partridge, she has worked hard for her reputation and is finding a niche of her own. From playing lead character Ella Simms on the short-lived Melrose Place, to a regular guest-starring role on Gossip Girl this season as Juliet Sharp, Cassidy has made herself known as one of Hollywood’s young, rising actresses. Cassidy’s been mostly noticed for her more outgoing characters (Ella and Juliet), but she believes in being in more challenging roles for the sake of improving as an actress. Next month, Cassidy will star alongside Selena Gomez and Leighton Meester in Monte Carlo, which leads the girls to Paris on a vacation—and beyond, due to a fortunate case of mistaken identity. We caught up with Cassidy discusses hair color, acting classes (where she still brushes up on her talent), and the challenges on the road to success.

ILANA KAPLAN: Why did you choose to take on a role in Monte Carlo?
KATIE CASSIDY: Emma was just so much fun. I really liked the script. She’s very full of life. I think she has just a big appetite for life in general. I don’t know if you’ve seen the movie yet, but if you have, I’m constantly eating in it. She wants to do everything. She wants to see everything… the glitz and the glamour. She thinks it’s going to be so amazing. It’s also a nice, cute coming-of-age. They go away to Europe and they go on these escapades and these adventures. They kind of come full circle, and realize, well, Emma does, that home is where she belongs.

KAPLAN: A lot of your characters have outgoing personalities. Are you more drawn to these types of roles?
CASSIDY: I think it just depends on the actor. I think it’s what I bring to it, which can be a good thing or maybe not such a good thing, depending on who the director is. For me, I just like to be as fun as possible, but I do like to bring a lot to a character. Given the script or the show, I know my boundaries, limits, and how far I can go with it. As far as me choosing these characters that have a lot of personality, I don’t necessarily think it’s intentional. I just think that I try and come up with a backstory of who they are, depending on the script or how rounded these characters are, and just go from there.

In SELF’s March issue, Gossip Girl’s Katie Cassidy demonstrates the latest fitness craze—Aerobarre—combining fat-blasting boxing with body-sculpting ballet for a fun, energizing fusion workout. The photos are amazing and I thought you may be interested in it.

Selena Gomez Hung Out With Girls On Monte Carlo Set

Selena Gomez likes boys as much as the next young starlet, but even she sometimes just needs her girl time. She recently told Latina all about her set adventures with her female pals. Here is what she had to say.

“Leighton and Katie [Cassidy] and me spent every scene together. We’d have dinner together and we would talk and we’d go out and it was always us three girls. There were romantic aspects for each of our characters and we had a lot of guys that were on the set, and at our hotel, but we never hung out with them. [Laughs]. We just hung out with each other”

Sounds like the Monte Carlo set was very divided! I am glad that Selena made time for some girl talk and just to be girly. She needed some slacking off time, after working so hard all the time. I cannot wait to see more from this movie! It’s going to be a good one, I really feel that it is. What do you guys think and how do you feel about what Selena said?

Since joining the cast of Gossip Girl as Juliet Sharp, Katie Cassidy has quickly developed a queen bee’s discerning eye. “I’m learning about fashion and I find myself knowing more about what I should wear,” she tells PEOPLE. “The whole show is very chic and the clothes are unbelievably beautiful. It’s like a girl’s playground.” But it turns out that for her own beauty regimen “less is more.” The actress focuses on keeping a balanced skincare routine, where sleep is high priority and is supplemented by product favorites like SkinCeuticals, La Mer and even drugstore standby, Aquaphor. How have you been spending your summer?
I feel like a gypsy because I have been living out of a suitcase all summer. I was all over Europe and then only had a few days off before I started filming Gossip Girl in New York.

Best memories?
I went to Amsterdam with my whole family before I started filming in Monte Carlo in June. Being with mom and dad at a bar is always interesting.

Most exciting thing that happened to you?
Shooting at the Eiffel Tower before sunrise (around 4 AM). The scene called for me running down the stairs barefoot so it was painful, yet fun! Also shooting at the Louvre before it was opened to the public.

What projects have you been involved with?
Monte Carlo and Gossip Girl and I’m always involved with my charity H.E.L.P. Malawi as well.

What’s been inspiring you?
The book, Why Men Love Bitches by Sherry Argov has changed my life. Do yourself a favor ladies and go pick up a copy at your nearest bookstore!

Most looking forward to this fall?
Staying home in Los Angeles! I just bought a new house before I left for Budapest. I haven’t spent more than 2 nights in it. I cant wait to start and cooking for family and friends!
