Arrow’s Katie Cassidy: On fame, Justin Bieber and dad David Cassidy

Written by owner on October 10 2013

Katie Cassidy stars as lawyer Laurel Lance in the CTV action series Arrow, which premieres its second season Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 8 p.m.

The series based on DC Comics’ Green Arrow follows crime fighter and billionaire playboy Oliver Queen (played by Toronto’s Stephen Amell), who is also Laurel’s love interest.

Cassidy, 26, didn’t grow up in the spotlight, but she does know a bit about fame. She happens to be the daughter of former teen heartthrob David Cassidy of The Partridge Family. The Star caught up with her in Toronto.

Q: Arrow has been a bona fide hit. But did you think one more superhero series would fly in this kind of oversaturated environment where everyone seems to have a superpower?
A: I honestly had no idea. My gut said it would. After reading the script, all the pieces were there, but you never know if the world is ready to see a show like this. We are really lucky and really fortunate it all worked out.

Q: In the season finale, one of the major characters gets knocked off in an explosion, which shocked a lot of viewers. Did you see that coming?
A: Yeah, it was definitely a shock. We found out a couple episodes beforehand, so it was obviously very sad. It definitely was a shock, but we needed something to have that impact to have something completely unexpected and it became a huge cliffhanger for Season 2.

Q: Your character Laurel finally hooks up with Oliver Queen in the season finale. Where do you think this is going to go?
A: Things are definitely always changing in television. For what Laurel has gone through in life, she has certainly had a huge arc. It’s opened her eyes to see things from a different perspective. I definitely think emotionally she’s taken on a lot. She lost her sister, she lost the love of her life and then he shows back up, her mother comes back, then leaves again, and now her boyfriend has passed away. There will likely be a lot of darkness and emotion that she has to go through. As far as her relationship with Oliver and where they go, it’s up to (creator) Andrew Kreisberg.

Q: But where do you think it should go?
A: I definitely think it worked when it was a will they, won’t they kind of dance, back and forth. It’s almost like that Dawson’s Creek theme, where you want Dawson to get together with Joey so bad, it just keeps the audience wanting more. I would eventually like to see them together. They have a star-crossed lover type aspect to them. But after all she’s gone through, I don’t even know how you get to that place.

Q: What was it like having David Cassidy as a father? How did you react to seeing him mobbed by fans?
A: I didn’t grow up with my father. I grew up with my mother and stepdad, so I never really experienced that thing. That’s the only thing I know. I really didn’t see any of that craziness.

Q: Your dad seems so grounded decades later that I was going to ask you for advice for the Justin Biebers of the world. As you know, he’s not been getting the best press lately.
A: That’s hilarious. I guess he should stay humble, stay grounded. What you do doesn’t define who you are. At least for me, this is my passion and my job, but it doesn’t make me who I am. I like to think I’m normal and have a good head on my shoulders.

Arrow: Scoop on when Laurel will become the Black Canary and scoop on when Roy will become Speedy from E! Online’s Kristin Dos Santos

Written by owner on October 10 2013

William: Please please please tell me I will get to see Katie Cassidy don the Black Canary outfit by season’s end on Arrow? And what about Roy becoming speedy?!
Arrow may just shock you by having both of these things happen sooner than you’d expect. “I think as always with these things, I think we surprise people with how fast get to things,” boss Andrew Kreisberg hints to us. “If it’s a great idea, our instinct is always to pull it forward and figure out the repercussions of it afterwards. If it’s a great idea, why wait?”

Arrow Mystery Solved: Laurel’s Season 2 Storyline Is to [Spoiler] the Vigilante!

Written by owner on October 02 2013

“She’s MIA from Season 2?s first episodic pics. She landed in the back row of the new cast photo. And glammish geek girl Felicity and someone else playing Black Canary have commanded the female-centric buzz.

But make no mistake, The CW’s Arrow most certainly has a plan for Katie Cassidy and the character of Laurel Lance.

As the superhero drama’s sophomore run opens up, months after the Undertaking that literally rattled Starling City, “Laurel’s joined the district attorney’s office … now that CNRI has been destroyed,” showrunner Andrew Kreisberg shared Tuesday on the set. “Her mission at the top of the season is to bring down the Arrow.”

(As for how Black Canary’s introduction in the form of a character played by Caity Lotz impacts the show’s first most likely candidate, Kreisberg previously maintained to TVLine: “[That] really is all Laurel’s story… another step in Laurel’s journey. [It] does not preclude Laurel from one day becoming the Black Canary.”)

Working alongside Laurel as she embraces her anti-vigilante cause is a new character, ADA Adam Donner (played by Dylan Bruce aka Orphan Black’s Hot Paul). “He’s a good guy, we hope,” Kreisberg said. “But he’s there as another foil for Laurel.”

Adam is also there as a callback to some “super” DNA, named as he is after 1978 Superman movie director Richard Donner. “We had a sign everywhere on the set that said, ‘Verisimilitude’” — as in Donner’s famous on-set mantra during that shoot. Meaning authenticity/plausibility, “That was the launch word for that movie,” Kreisberg said, “and that’s the word that we have adopted as well.” (With reporting from Vancouver by Vlada Gelman)”

‘Arrow’ scoop

Written by Monica on September 18 2013

EW shared with us some scoop about the new season of ‘Arrow’. You can read the whole article here.

As for what awaits Laurel in season 2, which picks up five months after the earthquake that leveled the Glades: “Both Laurel and Oliver are dealing with the death of Tommy. Even though Tommy had broken up with her, she really feels like she betrayed Tommy by sleeping with Oliver — and certainly after Tommy died trying to save her,” Kreisberg says. “So Laurel’s energy this season early on is to try to make amends for that. Unfortunately for Oliver, that means she wants to catch the vigilante in her new job as the District Attorney. So as she and Oliver are trying to deal with their respective grief at having betrayed and lost Tommy, their hunting each other at night. It’s a new and fun dynamic for us to put them in.”

Below the article you can also watch a short video about the character of Laurel and how she developped through the first season.
